james Corden Boxing

Boxing meets comedy as Gavin & Staceys star James Corden will be refereeing a new sports quiz which will feature our sporting heros including David Haye!

The squads are confirmed and it’s kick-off time on Sky1 HD’s brand new comedy quiz show. BAFTA®-winning Gavin & Stacey star James Corden referees the wacky challenge of sporting knowledge as two teams of comedians, sports stars, and celebrity sports fans compete against each other.

Former Liverpool star and Sky Sports football pundit Jamie Redknapp captains the red team as they take on England cricketing hero Freddie Flintoff’s blue team. Joining Redknapp as a regular panelist is comedian John Bishop, while Sky Sports News presenter Georgie Thompson lines up for Flintoff’s blues.

This first episode kicks off the series with an hour-long special featuring world heavyweight boxing champion David Haye, and the voice of Bob the Builder and man behaving badly, Neil Morrissey.

Across three rounds, the teams’ sporting knowledge is put to the ultimate test. A League Of Their Own takes its cue from sports fans’ obsession with lists and stats and the first round sees the teams arrange three possible answers into their order of preference. This week’s questions include: Who has the most tattoos – Maradona, David Haye or Chris Hoy?

The second round, Guest List, challenges the teams to come with up with the same answers a famous sports star has given in response to a question about their profession, and tonight the questions are all about The Hayemaker himself. What does David Haye think are the three best things about being a boxer?

The third and deciding round, Human Clock, is the ultimate test of knowledge and stamina. Two team members must answer quick-fire questions for as long as the third teammate can sustain a physical challenge. This week, John Bishop and Neil Morrissey go head-to-head as they don weighted skull caps in a chin-up challenge.

It’s red v blue, Redknapp v Flintoff, and no one wants to be on the losing side. Who’ll have the last laugh and claim victory, proving they’re truly in a league of their own?

Guests confirmed to appear in the rest of the series include Amir Khan, Jimmy Carr, Alastair Campbell, Ruth Jones, Claudia Winkleman, Matt Le Tissier, Dara O’Briain and Steve Harmison.

In a game of two halves, A League Of Their Own is all about banter and gags as this exciting new format embraces Sky’s proud sporting pedigree to create a back-of-the-net winner.

Amir Khan vs Andreas Kotelnik undercard

Saturday, July 18th, 2009

Everyone is looking forward to the main event tonight between Amir Khan and Andreas Kotelnik, which is taking place at the MEN Arena in Manchester, and UK viewers can watch it live on Sky PPV. I’m expecting a great fight with this one. A lot of people have completely written Kotelnik off because they don’t know much about him, but he took a ‘voluntary’ defence of his title to fight Amir, because he is confident he can win and intends to use this fight as a platform to bigger things. What some people might not know is that he was also an olympic silver medalist, and he travels well. For example, he took the WBA light welterweight title from Gavin Rees in a thrilling fight that ended in a 12th round TKO and has defended it twice since then. I believe that Amir will win the fight tonight, and that the Freddie Roach camp have transformed him as a fighter, but I’m not convinced that Kotelnik is the ’soft option’ that everyone makes out.

The undercard tonight is also fantastic, and it’s one of those events where I’m excited by nearly every bout. Here is an overvew:

Matthew Hall vs Anthony Small
Enzo Maccarinelli vs Denis Lebedev
Kell Brook vs Michael Lomax
Kevin Mitchell vs Rudy Encarnacion
Paul Smith vs Michal Bilak
Richard Towers vs Howard Daley
James DeGale vs Ciaran Healy
Billy Joe Saunders vs Matt Scriven
Frankie Gavin vs Graham Fearn

Obviously we have been talking a lot about Anthony Small vs Matthew Hall, but tonight also sees Enzo Maccarinelli’s first fight under new trainer Karl Ince after leaving the Calzaghe camp following a shock 9th round KO to Ola Afolabi. He’s taking a hard fight against undefeated Russian fighter Denis Lebedev (17 wins, 12 KOs). There is a fight with Ingle fighter Kell Brook, who many people compare to Prince Naseem (Naseem himself commented that they are both cut from the same cloth) and always proves to be entertaining. Kevin Mitchell (aka the Dagenham destroyer) is one of our favourite UK super featherweight prospects winning a majority of his fights by KO, and we’re looking forward to his return after a number of fights in the US. Paul Smith is a popular fighter from Liverpool who became popular after featuring in the Contender series, and is fighting tonight on the back of 3 good wins. Our boxing gold medalist winner James DeGale is having his 3rd pro fight after winning his last by an impressive KO. There is also going to be a fight with fellow Olympian Frankie Gavin – all in all, a cracking night!

On ITV4 there is also a great night of boxing from York Hall including a brilliant headline match up between the very popular Danny Macintosh and Welsh fighter Nathan Cleverly (billed as the next Joe Calzaghe) which should be a superb fight. I like both fighters very much, but see this going in Cleverly’s favour. The undercard for this fight also sees appearances from Tyson Fury and Jon Thaxton.

VIP Boxing – 17th May 2009

A few of the Box Pro team were at a recent VIP boxing event in the De Vere Whites premier lounge, at the Reebok stadium in Bolton. Headling the event was Alex Matvienko, who successfully claimed the vacant British Masters light-middle weight title in a hard fought battle against the ‘Barnsley Battler’ John Musgrave. Although Matvienko dominated for a majority of the fight, he took some hard blows in the 12th round as Musgrave rallied for the finish. However, Matvienko was still a clear winner.

Other noted fights included the debut of Sunderland fighter Trevor Crewe (Trevor ‘the wrecking’ Crewe) pictured above. Crewe had a fantastic, action packed debut which ended with a fourth round stoppage against Geraint Harvey. Crewe also brought a huge fan base with him to the event, including fellow Sunderlander Tony Jeffries (another Olympic star) who was present at the event.

Another highlight of the event included the young, up and coming fighter Keiran Farrell (see picture below). Keiran showed that although he has a quiet and polite character outside of the ring, inside the ring he is an animal! This is the second fight I have seen where he has demonstrated a lot of stamina as almost every punch thrown is a power punch. This fight was against veteran fighter Delroy Spencer who celebrated his 100th professional fight. Although the referee scored every round in favour of Farrell, he proved to be durable and a very good test for Farrell at this stage in his career.

Manchester Magic – 28th March

The 28th March was the date of ‘Manchester Magic’ which was another Hatton promotions event, held at Altrincham Leisure centre. Headlining the event was the younger of the Hatton brothers, Matthew Hatton, in a potential eliminator for the vacant IBO Welterweight championship against ‘Dangerous’ Ted Bami. The last time I had seen Matthew in the ring, was against fellow mancunian Craig Watson on the undercard of Hatton vs Lazcano at the Manchester City stadium. In that fight Matthew looked strong, but also one dimensional, and had no answer for what Craig Watson brought to the ring. In this fight, Matthew looked much more composed, and took his time with a cautious start against a dangerous fighter. The fight ended with a powerful punch to the solar plexus from Matthew; it was a short punch that was missed by most of the attending fans but was thankfully repeated on the many screens around the ring. Ricky Hatton was also seen supporting his brother from ringside, despite the fact he will soon be flying to Vegas to finish his preparations for the upcoming super fight with Manny Pacquiao.

Matthew associated his losses and stop-start career to not changing trainer sooner. As with Ricky, Matthew was coached by trainer Billy Graham. He said that he wasn’t happy with some of his performances, but he was winning fights so stayed with Billy longer than he should have.

I should have moved trainers sooner as I just wasn’t getting enough coaching with Billy [Graham]. I know I have done the right thing moving to Lee [Beard], since being full time with Lee my performances in the ring have improved massively. I am faster and stronger and I feel that I am improving all the time.

Overall the event was a huge success. The Hattons are all to familiar with high quality shows, and this was no exception. The event followed the UFC format in a lot of ways, including:

- Music in between fights
- Huge TV displays around the ring for showing replays, videos in between fights etc
- Ringcard girls
- Good quality programmes

Additionally, the event was arranged with Jane Couch who is now working closely with the Hattons, and Hatton promotions. She has been very influential to boxing over the years, and no doubt she was largely responsible for the match ups with the fighters. Apart from some late stand-ins, the fights were all well matched and provided some close and entertaining fights. One of which was the pro debut of Joe Murray (the Olympian) against veteran fighter Sid Razak. Sid is a tough and tricky journey man, but Joe won a unanimous decision in an energetic fight. Other noticeable fights included good wins for Scott Quigg, Rhys Roberts and Alfonso Vierya.

Finally, Hatton promotions showed that they have their finger truely on the pulse with the introduction of www.hattonboxing.tv. Thousands of fans tuned in online to watch the fight, in what can only be described as a turning point for boxing. More on this soon…
