Being a fan of Wii Boxing (the free boxing game that’s part of Wii Sports) we were very excited about the prospect of a game dedicated to boxing. Imagine the responsiveness of the controls if they spent all their time researching motion recognition for different punches? There was also the prospect of career modes much like the Fight Night games, a host of new boxers, real combinations, moderating power through how hard you swung the wiimote… But sadly, none of this is in the game!
There were disappointed faces all round, as we choose cartoon style characters with joke names and then entered into a dismal fighting system that was light years behind the basics of Wii Sports. It was so restrictive and unresponsive to control that we actually started laughing at how bad it was. To make it worse, the action is constantly interupted with loading screens, reminiscent of some earlier budget PC games from the 90s!
In a nutshell, you will have to be a serious Boxing fan to get much enjoyment out of this game (something even we failed to do!). For now you’ll have to settle with Wii Sports Boxing, and we just have our fingers crossed that a better version will come out soon!
